The original background of the Berlin Work was a soft pale yellow. The majority of the colors were taken from the reverse side which was protected from the harsh daylight.

Surprisingly enough the entire background was exectuted in silk as well which at the time was very costly. This is part of a set but, I have gotten many requests to separate these designs into stand alone projects. The chairseat is 122 stitches wide by 139 stitches tall and uses 42 DMC colors.

I obtained the color pallet from the reverse side of the needlework as the front had faded slightly.

The center has been left blank but the original needlework held three initials and a date of 1854.

This 1865 design came from a finished work lent to me by a friend. The design was executed in beads, wool and silk floss for highlights. The design is almost square at 222 stitches wide by 221 stitches tall and uses 55 DMC colors.

This is a very large pattern and just from the styling of it, it needs to be prominently displayed for the best visual affect. The design is a very large 298 stitches wide by 378 stitches tall and uses 81 DMC colors to match to the original pattern.

This 1860's pattern is from Grunthal's Verlag in Berlin and is part of the seller's collection. The design is pattern number 6689. While the original pattern was shown against a black background, which became popular after Prince Albert's death, I have shown it against a white background which makes the colors appear more realistic. The design as shown is 201 stitches wide by 170 stitches tall,slightly larger than the original pattern, which only showed one pattern and the start of the second in all directions. Thirty six DMC colors are used in this pattern.

While the needlework was behind glass so it was not exposed to the harsh elements of the day, unfortunately it was in direct sunlight and the reverse had to be used to get the color pallet. The brown leaves and the two small clusters of blue/green leaves slightly above the poppies were done in beadwork.

This early pattern by German designer A. Todt is quite striking for it's time. The pattern dates from the 1850's and is shown based on the original pattern. By using a color three shades darker than the background color, it gives the appearance of a damask background. The pattern shown is 189 stitches wide by 135 stitches tall and uses 15 DMC colors, for the design and one for the damask design. By changing the background color and damask color you can alter the appearance and look of the design. An alternative is shown below. When ordering you will get the pattern shown above.

The original pattern was created on a black background, but t is striking as shown.

This mid to late 1870s pattern is by Heinrich Kuhn of Germany and is number 15480. The design is 130 stitches wide by 82 stitches tall and uses 31 DMC colors.

VIOLET CORNER AND CENTER DESIGN - $8 USD
This 1870's pattern, #14556, by Heinrich Kuhn of Germany shows the French influence of Art Nouveau in this design. The pattern is only one quarter of the full design and can be lengthened in either direction by repeating portions of the design. The one fourth pattern as shown is 130 stitches wide by 90 stitches tall. If the design were to be duplicated as is, the finished product would be 260 stitches wide by 180 stitches tall. There are 10 DMC colors used in this design. Portions can be used for other projects as well.

Another 1870's pattern by Heinrich Kuhn of German, pattern number 14621 depicting purple zinnias with intertwining vines. The design shown is one quarter, including a corner which can be expanded in either direction. By printing out the black and white design on transfer paper this could be used to adorn a table cloth. Only 10 DMC colors were used and the zinnia flowers could be changed easily. The design as shown is 130 stitches wide by 130 stitches tall.

This 1850's pattern by Hertz & Wegener is very similar to a pattern shown above by Carl Wicht in both composition and coloring. At a time when copyrighting did not exist, it was not uncommon for one pattern maker to take another's pattern, make changes use similar coloring in a way of getting new customers. This is such the case. This pattern, number 7167, created several years after the one above. It is slightly smaller at 180 stitches wide by 180 stitches tall and uses only 48 DMC colors. This is an excellent companion to the one shown above.

This mid 1860's pattern, by Heinrich Kuehn, is numbered 658 and is early in his career since he started publishing on his own in 1867. Quite large, it is 300 stiches wide by 200 stitches tall and uses 52 DMC colors. The design can be enlarged if needed by increasing the black border.

Using only 46 DMC colors, the design matches the original pattern exactly. The pattern was loaned to me by a very good friend.
