This 1860s pattern of Waterlillies and birds is copied from a finished work in the seller's collection. The Waterlillies were originally completed in beads while the birds and foliage were done in wool. The background had faded to a soft rose beige, which I have used here as the background. At 146 stitches wide and 148 stitches tall, it is made up of 25 DMC colors. There was a corresponding chairback that accompanied the seat, however it was too damaged to salvage.

This 1860's pattern from the seller's collection is of a prize whippet resting on a patch of grass. The notation on the original pattern called for the highlight in the cape to be done in gold silk. Consisting of 18 DMC colors, the finished design is 150 stitches wide by 99 stitches tall.

This small pattern of a spaniel was modeled after Queen Victoria's famed spaniel, Dash. The original pattern was designed by the french patternmaker of the time, Sajou and comes from the seller's collection. Circa 1865, this pattern is comprised of 14 DMC colors and is 56 stitches high by 56 stitches wide.

This French design was originally intended to be a chasuble which would grace a priest's robe.  However this can easily be adapted to be a bell pull or bolster stripe.  Made up of just 17 DMC colors, it is 100 stitches wide by 210 stitches long for one repeat.  It could be made longer by repeating the 2nd motif to the desired length.

1870s GEOMETRIC FOOTSTOOL - $3 USD

This 1870s pattern comes from a finished work that was originally on a victorian footstool. Comprised of just 10 DMC colors, this could be adjusted to fit any decor, but it is being shown in the original color scheme, of shades in teal, red and tan. The pattern is shown as being 97 stitches wide by 97 stitches tall, but could be adapted to any size. This could be adjusted to make slippers, a tea cosy, pillow or your own footstool. In the original design, the lightest color in each shade was worked in silk, while the rest of the pattern was done in wool. The background was done in black, but I have shown it in a lighter color.

BEADWORK DESIGN - $3 USD

This 1870s pattern comes from a popular magazine of the day. As stated with the pattern, "while the design is simplistic in form, the beauty comes from the careful color placement within". Adaptable into any shape and form, the pattern is 114 stitches wide by 112 stitches tall. I have shown this in 31 DMC colors which closely match the original pattern. By alternating two shades of a color, any combination can be used. Originally the white chains were to be done in beads.

This 1860s Berlinwork pattern was designed to use up all those left over threads in "my lady's workbasket" as it was put. While the pattern shown is only 131 stitches wide, by 53 stitches tall, it can be enlarged to any shape and size. What the original pattern attempted to show was how to use 4 shades of any one color with the white center design of the diamond was to be worked in beads. I have tried to match as closely as I could to the original pattern to give you the same representation that was given 160 years ago.

This 1870s pattern was originally designed to be outlined in white beadwork, and the centers filled in with two shade of the same color scheme. While the pattern shown is 45 stitches wide by 38 stitches tall, it can be enlarged to any size or shape. Shown in 47 DMC colors, this closely matches the original color pallet of the victorian design. Slippers, tea cosies and lamp mats are few of the suggestions according to the accompanying article.

This Victorian design of beadwork medalions comes from both a pattern and the corresponding finished work in the seller's collection.  As shown the design is 118 stitchew wide by 105 stitches tall, and to use the colors that match the original pattern, it would result in 18 DMC shades.  On the original finished work, the white portion of the pattern was executed in beads.  This pattern can be enlarged in either direction.

Shown above is one pattern with placement for lengthening, which is 60 stitches wide by 138 stitches tall and 30 DMC colors.   The original needlework graced the center of a chair, which was popular at the time.

This 1860's French pattern comes from the seller's collection and the design is shown as the original was, with four color options for the cascading roses.  The design is 239 stitches wide by 118 stitches tall and to complete as shown uses 36 DMC colors.  The pattern can also be broken down where the roses would make stunning individual pictures, set in an oval frame, and the leaf border into a belt, shelf edge or bellpull.

This 1870's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  This was originally designed to be set on diningroom table or sideboard to hold the hot kettle, teapot and or water jug, keeping the underlying surface free from harm.  The lightest shade of gold was originally done in silkwork.  Made up of 15 DMC colors (including the background), the design is 262 stitches wid by 126 stitches tall.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection and originally came from England.  The original design was done in wool with silk highlights in the lighest shade of each color.  The background was initially a deep blue on the back but had faded to the soft blue shown here.  The design is 121 stitches wide by 120 stitches tall and uses 34 DMC colors.

This pattern comes from a Berlin Work sampler in the seller's collection dated 1848.  This design was repeated in the four corners of the sampler and is only 61 stitches wide by 58 stitches tall.  While small in size it is made up of 27 DMC colors to get all the shading.

This 1870's pattern comes from the seller's collection and originated in France.  Closely modeled after the prints of James Audubon of the 1850's this pattern is 93 stitches wide by 86 stitches tall and uses 21 DMC colors.  It appears to be from a French periodical of the time as it seems to be torn from a book and there are no designer marks.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work.  Comprised of two Cabbage Roses against a background of leaves and Delphiniums, it is a striking piece at 120 stitches wide by 117 stitches tall.  Originally shown against a background of white beadwork, it would look  impressive against any color; 38 DMC colors were used.

Set in an oval frame, this French Rose bouquet was part of a small packet was also showed alphabet designs.  While attributed to Sajou, it is unmarked.  The design is 120 stitches wide by 117 stitches tall including the oval and uses 38 DMC colors.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  This pattern is one of a pair and comes from the estate of the Head Gardener's family of  Sandon Hall in Stafford, England .   The design originally had black and grey beadwork leaves interspursed in the design, and I have changed it to the appropriate blue green shades of the time.  Comprised of 47 DMC colors, the design is 150 stitches wide by 147 stitches tall.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  The design centers around an oversized Cabbage Rose and Calla Lilly, surrounded by buds and foliage.  The colors were taken from the underside of the pillow as the top had faded.  The pattern is 140 stitches wide by 140 stitches tall and uses 29 DMC colors.  The original background color was a deep marroon.

This 1870's design was original made for the center of a chair back and seat, or the edge of portiers and comes from finished work in the seller's collection.  The design of red rosebuds against an edging of folded ribbons was originally against a off white background.  Unfortunately, the previous owner washed it and the vegetable dyes ran and made the background pink.  The design shown is 86 stitches wide by 117 stitches tall and uses 11 DMC colors for the one and a half repeats.  The original was worked in large java canvas and was 18 inches wide.  This could be accomplished if desired by placing the ribbons further apart.

This late 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection and once graced the front of a mantle.  The top was made of matching velvet and edged in corded multi color fringe  and was 65" long.  The design is made up of 30 DMC colors and one repeat is 124 stitches wide by 31 stitches tall.  The design shown is one and one half repeats and is 170 stitches wide and can be repeated to the desired length.  The original was done on large java canvas was was just under 12 inches tall without the fridge.  The design shows the original indian brown background.

ROSES FENDER BENCH COVER - $17 USD

This 1860's design originally graced a fender bench which sat in front of the fireplace.  The bench was too badly damaged to be saved, but the cover was in excellent condition for it's age.  In the original design, the lightest shade of each color was done in silk, while the rest was done in wool, on a black background, which became popular after the death of Prince Albert.  Made up of 30 DMC colors, the design is 252 stitches wide and 96 stitches tall, and would make an excellent sofa cushion or the center of a small rug.  Alternate color combinations are shown below.  While the stitche count remains the same, the number of colors is reduced to 24 DMC colors.

IRISES AND ROSES FIRESCREEN - $18 USD

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  Originally from the 1860's, it found its way in a 1930's round firescreen.   Luckily the design was protected behind glass so it was free of dirt and grime from the fire.  The Irises were done in white and grey beadwork, while the balance of the design was executed in wool, with the lightest shade of each color in silkwork for a sharp contrast.  The design is large at 180 stitches wide by 180 stitches tall.

This late 1850's pattern comes from the seller's collection and was once the part of the French magazine, "Magasin Des Demoiselles" as a free pattern.  It is marked "No. 10" and is made up of 50 DMC colors.  The design is 134 stitches wide by 133 stitches tall.  The colors have been matched exactly however they can be changed to match the stitcher's color scheme.

This 1850's pattern comes from the Magasin Des Demoiselles, which was sent to me by a friend in the USA and is noted as pattern number "28".  The design is made up of 42 DMC colors and is 64 stitches wide by 91 stitches tall.  Originally, this would have been used as a cover for calling cards or a sewing case.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  This design, while completed, was never used but rather packed away in lavender tissue paper.  The colors were as bright as the day it was completed.  The Roses and Leaves were done in woolwork while the Blue Bells were done in beadwork.  The background was unfinished on a light lavender canvas.  Made up of 37 DMC colors it is 124 stitches wide by 125 stitches tall.

This 1870's pattern comes from France and is part of the seller's collection.  The design shown is depicted in four popular color schemes of the time period.  It was given away as part of a monthly magazine of it's day.  The center was left open for the needleworker to put their family initial or small flower in the center as they saw fit.  One design is 92 stitches wide by 89 stitches tall and is made up of 10 DMC colors.  This would be equally attractive using four of the designs to make a cushion front.

This late 1850's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  The design was created during the ressurgence of the Gothic period thanks to Andrew Jackson Downing, famous architect and designer of the time.  The cenral arch is surrounded by Roses Calla Lillies and Fushias.  The original work was never mounted and was executed with a black background.  The design is made up of 56 DMC colors and is 140 stitches wide by 140 stitches tall.

This late 1870's pattern was sent to me by a friend in the UK and has been in her family since it was new.  The design, while in shades of pink, can be changed to any color scheme that the stitcher requires.  Made up of just 12 DMC colors, it is 81 stitches wide by 111 stitches tall.

VICTORIAN CARPET PANELS

The following set of 1870's panels, came from a finished work that was never assembled.  The carpet was to be made up of alternating panels of roses and leaves,each in two different designs.  Each panel design was centered on a 14 inch carpet square surrounded by  a gold rope design border.  I have left this part off as it is really not needed.  If someone would like the design I would be happy to send it to them.  I am listing them individually, as well as, as a set of all four patterns.  Alone, they would make great cushion covers if making a carpet is not to your liking.

This design of a pair of roses is made up of 27 DMC colors and is 99 stitches wide by 99 stitches tall.

This late 1870's pattern of a banner screen comes from the seller's collection and was a free pattern with a subscription to Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine.  Leviathan work is done over java canvas and worked in cross stitch using eight passes.  The design uses 19 DMC colors and is 170 stitches wide by 200 stitches tall.  This would be hung from a brass hanger off of the fireplace mantle to protect the females from the intense heat.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  The design was originally executed in the traditional shield shape of the time, with the Lillies and buds done in beadwork and the leaves in woolwork on an unfinished background.  Made up of 28 DMC colors it is 150 stitches wide by 150 stitches tall.  I have shown it on a red background because the corded edging the corresponding tassles were red and gold. This would have originally hung from a brass armature that hung from the fireplace.

SLIPPER HOLDER FRONT $5 USD

This late 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  Originally the design was totally executed in beadwork on a maroon woolwork background.  The needlepoint continued roughly and inch and a half around in all directions maintaining the shape as shown.  The sides and bottom were nailed to a piece of walnut in the same shape with fancy brass nailheads.  The top was left open for the master of the house to keep his treasured slippers in.  These were made by the girls of the house for their fathers and the boys completed the woodwork  The design is 128 stitches wide by 147 stitches tall and uses 7 DMC which match the original beadwork

This mid 1860's pattern comes from Berlin and is by the pattern maker B. Bonner.  The design was to be a repeated to the desired length as a mantle edge.  It could also be used as valance as well.  Including the scrollwork at top, which could be eliminated if desired, the design is 127 stitches wide and 135 stitches tall for one repeat.  The pattern uses 25 DMC colors to get the shading of the roses and violets.

This mid 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  This was originally a banner screen that hung from the fireplace mantle whose background was a soft baby yellow.  I have changed it to a medium peacock blue, which matches another firescreen from the same time period, as it was too close to some of the shades of green leaves.  The design is 140 stitches wide by 178 stitches tall and uses 22 DMC colors.

This mid 1860's pattern comes from the famed pattern makers of Hertz & Wegener.  The pattern was trimmed down but near as I can make out the pattern number is 7386.  The design is 202 stitches wide by 201 stitches tall and is made up of 54 DMC colors which matches the original design exactly.  The colors can be changed if desired.

This 1860's pattern is numbered 600 and comes from Hertz & Wegener of Berlin.  The design shown is 200 stitches wide by 150 stitches tall but can be expanded in any direction.  I have copied the design exactly showing many repeats for ease of duplication.  While the design shows a light pearl gray background, it would look equally impressive on a beige background as well.  The design as shown uses 16 DMC colors, and the primrose can be changed to reds or pinks with ease if the color shown does not match your color scheme.  For those inspired, this would make a stunning tablecloth design as well.

This 1860's pattern is numbered #2145 and is by the patternmaker LEIFFERT & CO of Berlin.  This is a large and opulent pattern of Roses and mixed flowers which has been copied exactly per the original pattern.  The design is an impressive 250 stitches wide by 220 stitches tall and uses 77 DMC colors.  The original pattern was executed on a light grey graph paper, however I have shown it against a black background as it makes a striking picture like this.

This late 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection and to date, it is the largest pattern in the collection.  Comprised of Roses, Dallias Daffodils and Tulips surrounded by a vast array of folliage, it stands at an impressive 282 stitches wide by 350 stitches tall.  Originally housed in a non-descript frame that did not do it justice, which later I found that it had been reframed to a smaller size.  The original needlework expanded five inches in both directions passed the outline of the design.  It uses 77 DMC colors to create the intricate shading.

This 1860's pattern comes from the designer SP DEVRIENT in Berlin.  This design is also the companion of the Red Crested Fowl on page two of this website, should you want the pair.  This pattern, unlike the Red Crested Fowl, came from France.  The design is 206 stitches wide by 200 stitches tall and is made up of 49 DMC colors.  Should you desire the pattern facing the oposite direction, I will be happy to create it or you.

This pattern, circa 1870, came from a small book of patterns and while not marked, it is attributed to SAJOU.  The design is for a single rose surrounded by a blue shaded trellis.  The pattern matches the original done in red with three alternative colors.  While the pattern can be enlarged in either direction, as shown, it is 156 stitches wide by 108 stitches tall.  The design done in one color is made up of  6 DMC colors.

This mid-1860's pattern was trimmed so that the number and the pattern maker were unable to decipher.  This lush design is made up of 41 DMC colors and is 160 stitches wide by 160 stitches tall.

This pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection and while the stitching and use of silk floss in the lightest color of each shade, suggest it belongs in the 1850's range, the design lends itself to the later part of the 1870's.  The design is made up of English Roses and white Lillies surrounded by  vast array of leaves.  I have used the background color that closely matches the original finished work.  The pattern is 226 stitches wide by 226 stitches tall and uses 41 DMC colors.  The roses could be changed to other colors if desired.

This is the companion pattern to the Small Bouquet #3 above by the same patternmaker.  These two patterns were on the same printed cardboard and sold as a set.  I have split them up in case they don't both appeal to the stitcher.  Like the pattern above this uses 28 DMC colors, which for the most part are the same and is the same size at 60 stitches wide by 60 stitches tall.

This 1870's pattern, while not marked, is attributed to SAJOU and came from France.  It was acquired with other loose pages that were once part of a small needlework booklet.  The design is made up of connecting roses with the predominate color of red with three color alternates as shown on the original pattern.  Also is given the original's suggestion for the background which was a checkerboard pattern in alternating shades of blue.  The design as shown is 157 stitches wide by 91 stitches tall with each rose comprised of 4 DMC shades and 4 DMC shades for the surrounding leaves.  This pattern can be expanded in any direction.

This 1860's pattern comes from the seller's collection and is similar to the previous open wreaths patterns.  This one is built around a central lilly with roses and hydrangia blossoms.  The design is by Hertz and Wegener of Berlin, however, the pattern number is unknown.  The pattern is made up of 46 DMC colors and is 180 stitches wide by 180 stitches tall.

This 1850's pattern is modeled after Queen Victoria's favorite dog "Dash".  This design came from a copy of the original pattern lent to me by a friend in England.  Using just 23 DMC colors the design is 180 stitches wide by 141 stitches tall.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  The design was a central focus on a black backround in a large ornate gilt frame.  While small in size it uses 45 DMC colors to get all the shading of the flowers and leaves and is 71 stitches wide by 70 stitches tall.  The original design had the snowdrops executed in beadwork.

This mid 1860's pattern comes from a finished work in the seller's collection.  Typical for the time after the death of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, backgrounds were executed in black  as a sign of respect for her loss.  The design is made up of 37 DMC colors and is 120 stitches wide by 121 stiches tall.

This 1860's pattern comes from a finished work that was lent to me by a great aunt.  The design was exectued with the flowers completed in beadwork and the leaves in wool on the original red background color.  The pattern is made up of 26 DMC colors and is 151 stitches wide by 194 stitches tall and would make a great chair back.

This French pattern of a grape vine for a bell pull comes from the pattern maker SAJOU and is marked #423.  The design as shown is made up of two repeats and is 144 stitches tall by 39 wide and uses 18 DMC colors.  These designs were to be used with borders that could be purchase separately.
